  1. Introduction

Biotechnology is a applied science and technology such as molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, and engineering to create industrial-scale technological processes. These processes exploit the biological activities of microorganisms, animal and plant cells to produce valuable bio-products for human life.

Biotechnology is applied in various processes — from beer production, wastewater management, crop improvement, biofuel, vaccine production, drug design, and gene therapy. The global increasing population together with the increasing human and social demands, the biotechnology industry has offered  abundant career opportunities for society.

 There are 3 major education fields in Biotechnology undergraduate program at Ton Duc Thang University;

  • Agricultural Biotechnology
  • Food technology
  • Biomedical Sciences

At TDTU, students gain practice experience in modern, well-equipped laboratories and have opportunities for internships at food manufacturing plants, research institutes, and hospitals.
The Department of Biotechnology features specialized labs for microbiology, molecular biology, tissue culture, as well as greenhouses, hydroponic systems, mushroom houses, and medicinal plant gardens — all serving the learning and research needs of students.

Students also have chances to participate in academic seminars and monthly Journal Club sessions, where professors and experts from leading national and international universities and research institutes present or share research achievement and experience.

Upon graduation, Biotechnology students will gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • Completion of all required courses and credits in the program;
  • English proficiency:
  • B1 international level (equivalent to IELTS 5.0) for the bachelor’s program;
  • B2 international level (equivalent to IELTS 5.5) for the specialized engineering program;
  • Possession of one of the following IT certificates:
  • MOS1 or MOS2 with a minimum score of 750, or
  • ICDL (documents, spreadsheets) with a minimum score of 75%;
  • Meeting the required extracurricular points of the program;
  • Fulfilling all program learning outcomes.
  • Professional knowledge and skills include:
  • Operating technological processes in factories;
  • Conducting research and production at an industrial scale;
  • Optimizing production processes;
  • Screening and identifying new strains/enzymes for industrial applications;
  • Performing biochemical, molecular biological, and microbiological analyses;
  • Applying molecular biology techniques for human disease diagnostics;
  • Developing new biomaterials for medical treatments;
  • Performing plant tissue culture;
  • Using biological methods for environmental treatment;
  • Extracting and enhancing secondary metabolites;
  • Conducting plant gene transfer and genetic diversity analyses.
  1. Career Prospects

After completing the program, graduates will be qualified to work in various sectors such as:

  • Medical centers (traditional medicine, pharmaceuticals, reproductive support, laboratory testing, etc.);
  • High-tech agricultural centers (plant tissue culture, seed production, organic farming, edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation, etc.);
  • Analytical and testing companies/institutes (food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics);
  • Bioproduct manufacturing companies (microbiology, biochemistry).

The program provides diverse career opportunities for graduates to become bachelors or engineers working in research or applied fields related to biotechnology.

  • Agricultural Biotechnology: Application of biotechnology techniques for modern agriculture such as breeding, tissue culture, gene transfer, production of microbial/biological products, edible and medicinal mushroom cultivation, and high-tech farming.
  • Food Technology: Controlling food processing and preservation technologies, fermentation processes, developing new food products, and managing food quality systems.
  • Biomedical Science: Working as laboratory technicians or research specialists in R&D departments of biopharmaceutical companies; supporting reproductive medicine (embryology), and related medical applications.

Besides, graduates may also pursue postgraduate studies at domestic or international institutions for long life educational  future career.
